Anna bran leis- owner
A native Guatemalan who was raised in Maryland, Anna has traveled extensively throughout Europe and Latin America while exploring the complex cuisines and flavors of various cultures. Anna has worked in the culinary industry for industry for more than 10 years and with her Husband Shawn is the owner and chef of DC Empanadas. Hers was one of the first generation of proper DC food trucks and it quickly gained a loyal following which continues to this day both on the truck and at her first physical location in Union Market. Taqueria Del Barrio is her first brick and mortar restaurant, which is a culmination of her passion, hard work and love of all things bold and flavorful!
Chris martino-bar manager
Native Washingtonian and Johnson and Wales grad, Chris has been mixing things up in the restaurant scene for years. Though trained in the culinary arts, he is more often found behind the bar than in the kitchen. His approach updates classic cocktails and standards with new twists and embellishments, often incorporating shrubs, gastriques, wine, beer, molecular mixology, seasonal fruits, herbs and spices to create interesting flavor combinations and aromas. He is thrilled to be originating the bar program at Taqueria Del Barrio which will evolve with each upcoming season.
mikey torres- general manager
Born in DC to a Mexican-Italian family, Mikey has grown up and lived in the DC metro area his entire life. A graduate of the Culinary Arts program at The Art Institute of Washington, Mikey began in the hospitality industry in 2001 and worked his way up through the Front of House over the following years. It was then he realized his passion for food and enrolled in culinary school and worked his way through kitchens in DC and Virginia. In 2009 he was featured on the NBC restaurant reality series, The Chopping Block with chef Marco Pierre White. In addition to his savory cooking skills, he also worked as a pastry chef for 2 years and is developing the dessert menu at Taqueria Del Barrio.
